A symposium for the community of researchers, industrials and regulators dealing with various aspects of development and implementation of living microorganisms, in areas such as food, agriculture, environment, biotechnology, probiotics and biomedicine. Special focus will be given to issues on microbial formulation, safety and commercialization.

Key note speakers:

Åsa Bergenholtz, Lyotech, Stockholm, Sweden

Michael Frodyma, Novozymes, USA

Trevor Jackson, AgResearch, New Zealand

Renata Leuschner, European Food Safety Authority (EFSA), Italy

Denise Munday, Valent BioSciences, Switzerland

Peter Rothschild, BioGaia, Sweden

Trudy Wassenar, Molecular Microbiology and Genomics Consultants, Germany

The major goal of the symposium is to promote interdisciplinary collaboration, to establish fruitful exchange of ideas and contacts between academia and industry from a multitude of domains, young and seniors, beginners and experienced.

Regulatory conditions and policy-making have large bearings on the possibilities to use microorganisms in beneficial environmental, food and biotechnological applications. We welcome contributions with new information on safety assessment of microorganisms, and which implications it may have for legislation and policy-making.

Differently formulated and freeze-dried preparations of the same Lactobacillus strain, emphasising the importance of understanding formulation- and processvariables for successful freeze-drying.
The DOM research programme - Domestication of microorganisms - aims to decrease the use of chemicals in the environment, by generating new knowledge about how we can make good use of special properties of naturally occuring microorganisms.
